A 29-year-old Toledo man died today from what family members believe was a lethal combination of the flu and pneumonia.

Eric Sherman Jr. died at St. Luke's Hospital, his father, Eric Sherman Sr. told The Blade. Lucas County Coroner Dr. James Patrick said an autopsy will be conducted Wednesday. But he said his office was told by hospital officials that Mr. Sherman Jr. had the flu.

Mr. Sherman said his son went to an emergency clinic on Sunday, from which he was later released. He was taken Monday night to St. Luke's Hospital after his condition worsened.

Also today, health officials in Henry County confirmed a county resident died Jan. 6 at a Lucas County hospital. A lab test confirmed she had the H1N1 strain of the virus. She was 47.

Julie Lauf, director of nursing, said the woman also had underlying health conditions.

In northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, nine people have died of flu-related causes this season.
