Mercy Health-Toledo breaks ground on new Perrysburg hospital

Mercy Health-Toledo broke ground Thursday morning on a $56.3 million hospital, surgical center, and medical building project to be built on the same campus as the Perrysburg Cancer Center that opened last year.
Construction on Mercy Health Perrysburg Hospital is expected to be completed in early 2019. The 101,000-square-foot facility will be connected to the Mercy Medical Center on Eckel Junction Road, near State Rt. 25 and I-475/U.S. 23.
Mercy Health officials heralded the new facility as a place for primary and specialty care under one roof.
It "will bring additional services and excellent team members to Perrysburg to deliver world-class care that's become synonymous with Mercy Health," said Bob Baxter, interim president and CEO of Mercy Health-Toledo.
“Perrysburg, with its growing population, is a community with a need for health care services that are both accessible and convenient,” he said. “That’s what called Mercy Health out here in the first place. ... We’ve planned with a thought toward growth and meeting future needs.”
Patients want access to comprehensive health care services close to home, Mr. Baxter said.
Jeff Dempsey, president of Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center and Children's Hospital, said the new hospital will be “a one-stop location for health care needs in the community.”
A 16-bed inpatient unit will open in April, 2018, and the entire hospital will open April, 2019, he said. The facility will include 46 inpatient beds, two surgical suites, a cafeteria and pharmacy, and physician offices.
The Rev. Joseph Cardone, vice president of mission at St. Vincent, and Sister Dorothy Thum, senior vice president of mission and values integration for Mercy Health, blessed the project and prayed for those who will work on construction.
Rudolph Libbe Inc. is the construction manager.
The hospital system announced the new project in April. It is the latest addition to the Perrysburg medical campus, which includes a free-standing emergency department and diagnostic center that opened in 2013, and the cancer center, which started taking patients in November.
Since 2013, the Perrysburg campus has added 70 jobs to the area, Mr. Dempsey said. By 2021, that will grow by another 177 jobs.
