Spartans defeat Wolverines 29-6

FINAL

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Connor Cook's 1-yard touchdown with 11:15 left in the fourth quarter helped No. 24 Michigan State to a 29-6 win over No. 23 Michigan today at Spartan Stadium.

Michigan put together a 12-play drive in the fourth quarter, but Darqueze Dennard intercepted Wolverines quarterback Devin Gardner (14 for 27 passing for 210 yards) at the Wolverines 3-yard line to give possession back to the Spartans.

Jeremy Langford's 4-yard touchdown run capped the win for the Spartans (8-1, 5-0 Big Ten), who regained the Paul Bunyan Trophy, given annually to the winner of the in-state rivalry game.

Cook, Michigan State's quarterback, finished 18-33 passing for 252 yards and was intercepted once.

The Wolverines (6-2, 2-2 Big Ten) host Nebraska at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at Michigan Stadium.

THIRD QUARTER

Michael Geiger's 35-yard field goal with 9:54 left in the third quarter has given Michigan State a 16-6 lead over Michigan today at Spartan Stadium.

After Raymon Taylor intercepted Connor Cook with 2:29 left in the third, Michigan lost 21 yards on the ensuing drive, as Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner was sacked three times on the drive.

Michigan State has outgained Michigan 252 yards to 114, and Gardner is 10 for 20 passing for 173 yards. The Wolverines have negative-59 yards rushing.

HALFTIME

Bennie Fowler's 14-yard touchdown catch with 23 seconds left in the first half has helped Michigan State to a 13-6 lead over Michigan at halftime today at Spartan Stadium.

Michael Geiger's second field goal of the game, a 44-yard kick, gave the Spartans a 6-3 lead with 11:19 left in the half.

Michigan kicker Brendan Gibbons' 39-yard field goal banked off the right upright and tied the game at 6-6 with 3:22 left in the half.

 

FIRST QUARTER

Michigan and Michigan State traded field goals and are tied 3-3 after the first quarter in a Big Ten Conference game today at Spartan Stadium.

Matt Wile's 49-yard field goal gave Michigan a 3-0 lead with 10:38 left in the first quarter. Ottawa Hills graduate Michael Geiger kicked a 40-yard field goal tied the game at 3-3 less than two minutes later.

Michigan State's defense sacked Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner five times in the first quarter.
