Woman gets 6 months in jail for drunken crash in Kalamazoo County that killed her 2 friends

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A 25-year-old woman who was drunk when she caused a crash that killed two of her friends in western Michigan has received a 6-month jail sentence.

Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge Alexander Lipsey sentenced Kari Braley today. Braley pleaded guilty Aug. 16 to drunken driving causing death.

Police say Braley had a blood alcohol level of 0.09 percent when she lost control of her car and crashed. It happened about 3:15 a.m. on Nov. 18 in Kalamazoo Township.

The crash injured her passengers, 22-year-old Brittany Despins and 23-year-old Trevor Stuck. Two passers-by were treating Stuck when 23-year-old driver Margaret Robinson struck the three of them.

Stuck died at the scene, and Despins died 5 days later at a hospital.

Robinson awaits sentencing Wednesday for a moving violation causing death.
