LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles jury has awarded more than $150 million in damages to a 13-year-old girl who watched her family perish in a fiery freeway crash.

An attorney for Kylie Asam said today that she doesn’t fully comprehend the scope of the verdict reached last week.

Asam was 9 when she and one of her brothers climbed out of the window of her family’s crumpled SUV after it struck the rear of a big rig on Interstate 210. They watched their parents and older brother, who were trapped in the SUV, get burned to death after the vehicle caught fire.

The jury agreed the big rig driver was negligent for parking on the shoulder of the freeway in the early morning darkness without leaving any light on.
