Northeast Corridor partially shut down after Amtrak train derails in Baltimore; no injuries.

BALTIMORE — Amtrak says a passenger train derailed in a tunnel south of Baltimore, forcing the rail service to shut down the corridor between Washington and Baltimore.

Amtrak says the Silver Meteor from New York to Miami became disabled in the B&P Tunnel shortly after 7 p.m. today. None of the 158 passengers was injured.

Amtrak says the lead wheels of the locomotive came off the rails. The passenger cars remained upright and on the tracks.

As a precaution, power to the train was cut off, and a rescue locomotive was sent to take the passengers back to Baltimore’s Penn Station. MARC commuter rail service between Baltimore and Washington was also shut down following the derailment.

Amtrak did not say when service would resume.
