DILLON, Colo. — A snowmobiler is dead after a large avalanche in Colorado and a skier is missing in another slide.

Gunnison County coroner Frank Vader says the snowmobiler was killed in a slide near Kebler Pass, outside Crested Butte, Monday, the ninth avalanche death nationally this season. Another person was buried but escaped.

The skier is missing after an avalanche in the backcountry near Keystone Ski Resort on Monday. A second skier was caught in the slide but was able to get out and get help.

Searchers resumed looking for the skier, a man in his 40s, today after triggering an avalanche to make conditions safer.

Huge recent snowfall has been luring skiers and snowboarders to Colorado’s mountains but has increased the avalanche danger in much of the backcountry.
