MARIPOSA, Calif. — Officials say a pilot has been killed after a small plane crashed at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Central California.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says that the single-engine amateur-built Bowers Fly Baby 1A plane crashed shortly after 10 a.m. today.

Gregor says the plane went down about three miles north of the Mariposa-Yosemite Airport.

Gregor says the pilot was the lone passenger inside the plane. The name of the pilot has not been released.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will both investigate the cause of the crash.
