Californians charged in Chicago with freeing minks from cages in Illinois

CHICAGO — Two Californians face federal charges after allegedly freeing 2,000 minks from cages on an Illinois farm and spray-painting “Liberation is Love” on the side of a barn.

Federal prosecutors say the release happened last year southwest of Chicago. The Morris, Illinois, farm sells minks for using in making coats and other luxury garments.

The Los Angeles men also allegedly pulled down fencing so the fleet-footed minks could escape the farm grounds.

FBI agents arrested 25-year-old Tyler Lang on Thursday in California. Twenty-seven-year-old Kevin Johnson is in custody in Illinois.

The indictment charges them with conspiracy and intrastate travel to damage and interfere with the operations of an animal enterprise. A single count carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.

The names of the defendants’ attorneys weren’t immediately available.
