SACO, Maine — Five members of a family, including three children, were found dead Sunday inside a southern Maine apartment, state police said.

The bodies of a father, mother and children were found inside the apartment in Saco, state police spokesman Steve McCausland said.

Saco police chief Brad Paul said there appeared to be no threat to the public’s safety.

“We think that the crime scene is contained to the apartment,” he said.

Paul said a concerned neighbor went to the apartment to check on the well-being of the occupants Sunday afternoon and saw a body inside, then backed out and called police.

State and local police, along with the medical examiner, were on the scene Sunday night at the apartment complex along the Saco River.

A state police official at the scene said it was unlikely the identities of the deceased would be released Sunday night. The bodies must be identified by the medical examiner and next of kin notified.

Saco is a city of about 18,000 people in southern Maine, about 10 miles southwest of Portland.
