8 firefighters hospitalized after suffering burns while battling wildfire in Mendocino County

LAYTONVILLE, Calif. — Officials say eight firefighters were taken to the hospital after suffering burns while battling a wildfire in Northern California.

Cal Fire Capt. Carlos Guerrero on Saturday says the firefighters sustained burns during the blaze near Laytonville in Mendocino County late Friday night.

Guerrero says the injured firefighters were in stable condition after being airlifted to the University of California-Davis’ burn center for treatment.

Cal Fire spokeswoman Lynne Tolmachoff says no details were immediately available on how the firefighters were injured. They include three firefighters from Santa Clara County and five inmate firefighters.

Officials say an evacuation order is has been issued for the fire which is threatening about 35 homes.

The blaze, started by lighting on July 30, has burned more than 11 square miles and is 30 percent contained.
