  • A gunman with an assault-style rifle five years ago entered a school in Newtown, Conn., and opened fire on students.

    It happened again during an outdoor concert in Las Vegas, a church service in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and classes in Parkland, Fla. A constant among the killings was the type of weapon.

    Mass shootings often bring a wide debate on firearms and particular focus on the AR-15-style rifle. But in Toledo, as in many cities, police typically seize illegally possessed handguns at a much greater rate than rifles or shotguns.

    The Blade reviewed a recent Toledo Police Department property room inventory list and found handguns make up roughly three out of four seized firearms. That count recorded 900 handguns, 206 rifles, and 128 shotguns in department possession.
