OSU defeats Northwestern 40-30

FINAL

EVANSTON, Ill -- Carlos Hyde scored three touchdown as No.4 Ohio State rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat upset-minded No. 16 Northwestern, 40-30, tonight before a packed house at Ryan Field. Hyde rushed for 168 yards.

The Buckeyes, 6-0, trailed for the first time this season when Northwestern enjoyed a 23-13 lead in the third quarter.

Hyde's third touchdown came after he was originally ruled down on a third down carry at the three-inch line in the fourth quarter. On fourth down, OSU coach Urban Meyer sent in the field goal unit. He called them off and sent in the offensive unit. The officials reviewed the play and gave Hyde the touchdown.

OSU scored on the game's final play when Joey Bosa fell on a fumble in the end zone when Northwestern tried several laterals.

THIRD QUARTER

No. 4 ranked Ohio State got a four-yard touchdown run from Carlos Hyde in the third quarter to inch closer to Northwestern, but still trailed 23-20 to the inspired Wildcats tonight in a Big Ten battle before a packed house at Ryan Field.

Northwestern took the second half kickoff and drove 60 yards in 12 plays but could only notch a Jeff Budzien 32-yard field goal.

OSU's Braxton Miller suffered his third turnover of the game when he fumbled in the third quarter deep in Northwestern territory.

 

HALFTIME

EVANSTON, Ill -- For the first time this season, No. 4 Ohio State trails in a college football game.

Inspired Northwestern, ranked No. 16, leads the mistake-prone Buckeyes, 20-13, tonight at halftime before a sellout crowd at soggy Ryan Field.

Northwestern quarterback Kain Kolter caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Siemian and scored on a two-yard run in the second quarter.

OSU got a touchdown on special teams when Bradley Roby blocked a NU punt and recovered it in the end zone to give OSU 10-7 lead.

OSU field goal kicker Drew Basil connected on two field goals of 27, and 20 yards. NU's Jeff Budzien connected from 23 and 30 yards.

An OSU fumble and a failed fake punt led directly to 10 NU points.

 

FIRST QUARTER

Ohio State leads Northwestern 10-7 after the first quarter in a Big Ten battle tonight before a jam-packed sellout at soggy Ryan Field.

Bradley Roby's block and recovery of a Northwestern punt in the end zone capped the first quarter scoring.

Northwestern took a 7-3 lead when backup quarterback Trevor Siemian connected on 9-yard play.
