Meyer grades his work/home balance a B

With the recent health scares of two NFL coaches again casting a spotlight on the stresses of a football life, Urban Meyer was asked this week how he is able to maintain balance.

"You're asking the wrong guy," he said.

For the 49-year-old Meyer, the biggest question has never been if he would win big at Ohio State but for how long. Could a coach who burned out at Florida suddenly find perspective at a program where the cauldron of pressure boils just as hot? Though Meyer is in a good place, the hospitalizations of NFL coaches Gary Kubiak (ministroke) and John Fox (heart surgery) evoked one that was not.

"I completely let it go at one point, and every time I hear something like that I pray for their families and the coach," Meyer said. "It's something you've got to watch."

Meyer now grades his work/home balance a B. He is said to follow all the requirements of his daughters' pink contract — eat three meals a day, exercise, etc. — except for the quixotic one about a nine-hour workday.

Life is good these days, Meyer the longest honeymooner since Ralph Kramden. The true test will be — gasp — his first loss, though fortunately for him, that may not come anytime soon.
