COLUMBUS — Ohio State defensive line coach Mike Vrabel is leaving his alma mater to become linebackers coach for the Houston Texans.

The school confirmed the departure while Vrabel later said he is joining former Penn State coach Bill O'Brien's staff in Houston.

Vrabel, a former Buckeyes All-American lineman who played 14 years in the NFL, spent the past three seasons as OSU's defensive line coach. He helped develop the defensive front into the strength of an otherwise shaky defense last season and became known as one of the staff's elite recruiters.

"I am thankful for everyone associated with [Ohio State] for 3 great years," Vrabel wrote on Twitter. "My family and I are excited to join the Houston Texans."
