Villages celebrate sweet delights
6/12/2014Fruitful celebrations will be under way in two Toledo area communities this weekend.
The village of Holland is hosting its 76th annual Strawberry Festival, while the village of Whitehouse will host its 32nd annual Cherry Festival. The Strawberry Festival continues today at Strawberry Acres Park, 7807 Angola Rd., with carnival rides and a DJ. Gates open at 4 p.m. Friday brings the first live music performance, with the Reese Dailey Band taking the stage, and by Saturday, the festival will be in full swing, with the rollie-pollie run and strawberry king and queen pageants. The festival closes on Sunday with a bake-off and parade at 1 p.m. Carnival rides, games, food, and music will be available daily. The festival runs from 4 to 11 p.m. today, and closes one hour later on Friday. It reopens from noon to midnight on Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. There is a $3 admission charge for festival-goers over age 6 and tickets must be purchased for the rides. Information: hollandstrawberryfestival.org.
In Whitehouse, the three-day Cherry Festival kicks-off at 6 tonight in Village Park, with amusement rides, a beer and wine garden with entertainment, and food from various vendors. On Friday, the festival opens at noon with arts, crafts, retailers, food vendors, rides and attractions, fresh cherry pies and desserts, live entertainment, and more. Catch a free movie screening of Despicable Me 2 at 10 p.m. The fun continues on Saturday with a parade at 1 p.m. featuring the Anthony Wayne Marching Generals. The third annual cherry pie eating contest begins at 2 p.m. There will also be barbecue and other foods, music, fire dancers, laser tag and other games, and a fireworks finale at 10 p.m. Festival gates close at 10 tonight and reopen from noon to midnight Friday and 9 a.m. to midnight Saturday. The Gibsonburg Community Corp. will hold a celebration of another kind. Its third annual Celebration of the Arts Festival at Williams Park runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. With the addition of the Golden Bear 5K Color Run, the festival will feature a craft sale, fishing derby, car show, arts parade, music, and more. The family-friendly movie Mr. Peabody and Friends will be shown at 9 p.m. Information: 419-307-3264.
