Eat, vote, play at Pizza Palooza

Northwest Ohio will find out who has the best pizza this weekend at Pizza Palooza at Centennial Terrace.

Nine area pizza parlors will compete in the annual pizza making contest and vie for the people‘‍s choice award and the judge’‍s award. More thanr 12,000 people are expected to vote in the competition, which runs from 5 to 11:30 p.m. Friday and 4 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Children‘‍s activities include face painting, bounce houses, and activities from the Imagination Station, YMCA/JCC, Toledo Zoo and Toni & Guy Hair Dressing Academy. Live musical performances by Mt. Fuji and the Eruptions, Distant Cousins and Last Born Sons are planned for Friday. Saturday’‍s acts are Boffo, Barile and Mary and the Wheeler Brothers.

Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for children age 5 to 12, and children age 4 and under are free. Pizza vendors will be selling pizza for $1.50 - $2 a slice. Advance admission tickets are available at Metamora State Bank and the Sylvania Area Chamber Office. Information: sylvaniachamber.org.

 

■ Individuals dressed in superhero-like costumes will converge on Toledo this weekend to talk and celebrate gaming and anime for Glass City Con IV. The two-day event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Seagate Convention Centre. Glass City Con is Toledo's premiere otaku convention, and celebrates Japanese animation, gaming, cosplay, and the culture of fans.

Admission is just $30 per person at the door. There will be contests, tournaments, vendors, featured artists and more. The event will also include tributes to some of Gainax's most popular shows. The anime studio celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Information: glasscitycon.com.

 

■ The Monroe County Fair will open its gates to the public on Sunday. The week-long fair will include a monster truck show, tractor pull, demolition derby and live entertainment. Animal shows, contests and demonstrations, a dance, shooting sports and children‘‍s activities, including a family circus, are also planned. Merchants will be on site and carnival rides and food will be available.

Concert headliners for the fair include country crooner Justin Moore, country and gospel quartet the Oak Ridge Boys and New Odyssey. Gate admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children age 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and under. Fair gates are open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m starting Monday through Aug. 2. Veterans will be admitted free until 6 p.m. Monday and children up to age 17 will be admitted free until 5 p.m. Tuesday. On Wednesday , seniors age 65 and older will be admitted for $2 and women and girls age 12 and over will be admitted for $2 on Thursday. Information: monroecountyfair.com.
