Ohio Light Opera 36th season wraps up Aug. 9

Esteemed troupe in Wooster, Ohio, is presenting 7 productions including ‘My Fair Lady’

Theater-goers can celebrate summer with a trip to Wooster, Ohio, for a show presented by Ohio Light Opera, the highly regarded company of the College of Wooster, now in its 36th season. The season runs through Aug. 9.

The headliner is My Fair Lady, Lerner and Loewe’s 1956 classic. Remaining performances are Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m., and Aug. 8 at 2 p.m.

Call Me Madam, a 1950 satire on women and politics, will be presented Friday at 2 p.m., Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. Performances of Jerome Kern’s 1918 Oh, Lady! Lady!! are Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

The last chance to see Victor Herbert’s Dream City and the Magic Knight, first performed in a vaudeville house in 1906, is Aug. 8 at 7:30.

The Ohio Light Opera’s season also includes three traditional operettas, Emmerich Kalman’s The Little King (Saturday and Wednesday at 2 p.m.), Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance (Tuesday and Aug. 7 at 2 p.m.), and Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus (Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m.).

‘Legally Blonde’

The hit Broadway show Legally Blonde: The Musical will be staged this weekend at the Sandusky State Theatre.

The blonde in question, Elle Woods, leaves California and heads for Harvard Law School to win back her boyfriend, but eventually finds her true route to success.

The Sandusky State Theater Repertory Company operates in collaboration with the Bowling Green State University Firelands College theatre department and Terra State Community College’s music and production department.

Performances of Legally Blonde are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday at Sandusky State Theatre, 107 Columbus Ave. in Sandusky. Tickets, $24, are available from 419-626-1950 and sanduskystate.com.

There also will be an exhibit of artwork by local female artists that includes jewelry designed by Brittany Murphy and worn in performances of Legally Blonde.

Summerstock Toledo, an area student-run theater organization, will present ‘‍Little Shop of Horrors’ this weekend in McQuade Theater in St. John’s Jesuit High School.

Summerstock Toledo, an area student-run theater organization, will present Little Shop of Horrors this weekend. Students or recent graduates from several area high schools perform onstage and also run the business and technical aspects of the show.

The musical comedy’s plot centers on Seymour Krelborn, a florist’s assistant who finds a new breed of plant he names Audrey II after a girl he admires. 

The carnivorous plant that sings and talks promises Seymour fame and fortune as long as he keeps feeding it blood. Seymour eventually finds out where Audrey II is really from, and what the weird plant’s nefarious plans are.

Little Shop of Horrors will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday in McQuade Theater in St. John’s Jesuit High School, 5901 Airport Hwy.
