Music Under the Stars to wrap up on Sunday

Sunday’s Music Under the Stars concert by the Toledo Symphony’s summer Concert Band will bring to a close this season’s series of four performances in the Toledo Zoo Amphitheater.

These popular free family events have drawn crowds for decades; this year is no different. The final program is titled “Music from Stage and Screen,” and will include lots of show tunes, from Elmer Bernstein’s score for The Magnificent Seven and George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, to John Williams’ Star Wars Trilogy.

Robert Mirakian will conduct and Tony Geftos of WTVG-TV, Channel 13, will be emcee.

Appearing in the guest slot will be female performers — the Off Broadway Dance Company, with plenty of tapping in store, and the Pride of Toledo Chorus, a longstanding barbershop group.

Refreshments are available before and during the performance.

As with all these concerts, TARTA’s Stars Shuttles will make getting there and back part of the fun. At $1 per person each way, big buses leave from Miracle Mile, Franklin Park Mall (near Kohl’s), Centennial Terrace in Sylvania, St. Luke’s Hospital in Maumee, and the Waterville Kroger store parking lot.

Departure is one hour before the concert and shortly after the final number on the concert program.

Collins

This is the 10th anniversary of Sunset Jazz and Arts Festival, a regional event held in Grand Rapids, Ohio, and set for 2 to 10 p.m. Aug. 17 along the Maumee River towpath, just behind the downtown.

Presented by the Grand Rapids Arts Council, with support from the local historical society and area businesses, the festival is free.

Suzanne Carroll will be host for the jazz segments, about 45 to 60 minutes each. On the program will be the Toledo School for the Arts jazz band at 2:30 p.m.; the Bob Rex Trio at 3:30 p.m.; Tim Tiderman and Organized at 4:30 p.m., and Ramona Collins at 6 p.m.

Closing the event onstage will be the group Sixth Edition at 7:30 p.m.

Local artists will be on hand throughout the day, with two and three-dimensional works to show and sell. Grand Rapids restaurants and the local Boy Scouts will be selling a variety of foods; beer and wine will be available as well.

Visitors should take their own seating, but leave the coolers at home, planners say.

Heritage Church of God, 3520 Strayer Rd., Maumee, will present the 4 One Quartet in concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 at the church. Southern gospel music is on the program, which is free, but will include an offering.

The quartet was formed in 2012 by Brad LedBetter, Dave Randall, Will Funk, and Jim Quales, all of whom had been singing for years. So far, 4 One, which is based in Reed City, Mich., has recorded four CDs and one DVD, all in Nashville.

Dust off that clarinet or trombone! It’s time to muster for the Owens Concert Band, a project at Owens Community College open to faculty, students, and local musicians who love to play band instruments together.

William Fred Dais is conductor and the band presents several concerts during the school year.

Rehearsals are 3:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays starting Aug. 14. All the action will be in the band room, No. 111 in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts on the Owens campus.

Presenters are gearing up for the 2014-2015 season. In downtown Monroe, the River Raisin Centre for the Arts, 114 S. Monroe St., is holding an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday to show off the creative and performing options available.

“This night highlights all our arts education programs together," said executive director Mike Trapp.

“It will be especially helpful for families where several members, at varying ability levels, can explore diverse performing arts interests.”

Tours of the campus and a chance to meet instructors in music and dance will be available at this free event. All ages are welcome to attend and sign up. A showcase of singers, dancers, and musicians on the historic stage will fill the air.

If you enjoyed the Metropolitan Opera’s ongoing series of Live in HD screenings of grand opera at local Cinemark theaters, you may be happy to hear that Fathom Events, which also presents the opera and other shows, has chosen to include ballet in its offerings.

This season will bring the grandest dance company of all, the Bolshoi from Moscow, to Toledo and hundreds of other cities in its first 2014-2015 season of four presentations, each on a Sunday matinee time slot.

Fallen Timbers 14 in the Maumee shopping center is the only local venue for these broadcasts. Three of the events will be recorded live and broadcast on delay the same day. The fourth will be recorded at an earlier date.

Here’s the schedule: Oct. 26, The Legend of Love, with choreography by Yuri Grigorovich, long-time Bolshoi artistic director, and sets and costumes inspired by the Middle Eastern world.

The Bolshoi’s version of The Nutcracker is set on Dec. 21; Swan Lake on Jan. 25, and Romeo and Juliet on March 8. Show times for all screenings will be 12:55 p.m. Tickets are $16-$17 at the box office.
