German-American fest starts Friday

Antique and classic boat show returns to Toledo marina

German food, music, and beer will be in plentiful supply at the 2014 German American Festival, Friday through Sunday at Oak Shade Grove in Oregon. The three-day festival,one of the Toledo area‘’‍s oldest and largest ethnic events, will feature a pretzel eating contest, an old Swiss stone-throwing contest, a Swiss cheese eating contest, and lots of beer. There will be face painting and clowns on Saturday and Sunday, along with amusement rides like bumper cars, paratrooper, fun house, sizzler, merry-go-round, tilt-a-whirl and many more for children and the young at heart. The Hummel Look-Alike contest is for children ages 2 to 10, and a soccer game and German Baking Contest are planned for Saturday. Festival gates are open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and noon to 11 p.m. Sunday. General admission is $8 for adults. Children 12 years of age and under are admitted at no charge when with an adult. Contestants of all ages will gather Saturday at the Farmers’ Market in downtown Whitehouse to stuff their faces with doughnuts at the village’‍s annual Donut Eating Contest. Competitors will be divided into three age groups and the participant to finish their doughnuts first is declared the winner. Kids age 6 and under will have to eat one doughnut, while kids ages 7 to 12 will eat two. Children 13 and older, along with adults, will be challenged with four doughnuts. Doughnuts will be provided by Wixey Bakey and the competition begins at 11 a.m. with the youngest contestants. Winners will receive bragging rights for one year, their picture in the village newsletter and a goody bag filled with other prizes. Contestants must register in advance and each category will be limited to 10 contestants. Completed registration forms can be submitted at Cherry Tree Bakery or Village Hall. The Toledo Antique and Classic Boat Show will return this weekend to Toledo’s Skyway Marina and the National Museum of the Great Lakes. The two-day event, an exhibit of maritime history, will feature the historic U.S. Brig Niagara and the famous War of 1812 vessel of Oliver Hazard Perry, who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie. The family friendly show runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the boat show and show activities is $5. For $15 guests can attend the show and tour the National Museum of the Great Lakes, SS Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship, and the US Brig Niagara tall ship. Information: toledoboatshow.com.
