There will be at least one new craft brewery in Toledo in 2016.
Scot Yarnell, 48, and Keefe Snyder, 31, plan to open Earnest Brew Works at 4342 S. Detroit Ave. by early summer.
Yarnell is the president of the Glass City Mashers homebrewing club, and taught a homebrewing course for beginners at Owens Community College Learning Center Maumee this fall. He has been brewing for more than 20 years. Snyder, also a member of the Mashers, has been brewing for about seven years.
The South Toledoans started thinking about turning professional in the summer of 2014.
“We both live in South Toledo and we started riding together to [club] meetings together and stuff,” Yarnell said. “So every now and then we would brew together. We just started talking more and doing a little bit of research and thought it was pretty doable.”
By working together, Yarnell and Snyder discovered they had similar philosophies when it comes to making beer.
“The inspiration for the name sort of comes from the definition of the word earnest, which means serious in intention, purpose, showing depth and sincerity. The definition captures our attitudes toward beer and how we brew.”
EBW, which will be located at the southern end of Byrne Road near the Anthony Wayne Trail, will have a taproom that’s open three days a week — likely Thursday through Saturday. The bar will feature 12 taps with a “good variety of beers,” Yarnell said. There will be onsite serving and growler fills, and the owners plan to have their beers served around the city as well.
“We’re not solely going to focus on a particular kind of beer, but we are definitely strongly influenced by American styles and American craft beers,” Snyder said. “We’re IPA lovers, we like a lot of specialty beers, and seasonal offerings. We like incorporating local products like coffee and fruit into those beers and we’re going to try to have those offerings all the time.”
