Homicide suspect apprehended in Toledo foot chase

A homicide suspect was captured today following a foot chase through central Toledo.

Jonathon Johnson, 23, of 1659 Belmont Ave., is charged with one count of murder for the shooting death of Jonathan Morris, Jr., 22, who was killed Oct. 5. The charge was filed against him Thursday afternoon in Toledo Municipal Court.

Police went to arrest Johnson at a home in the 800 block of Dorr Street today, but the suspect jumped out of a second-story window, Toledo police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said.

“The chase was on,” the sergeant said.

The pursuit began about 9:35 a.m. and included agents of the U.S. Marshals Service.

A little more than 30 minutes later, police found Johnson hiding in a dog house in the 800 block of Johnson Street near Belmont Avenue.

After Mr. Morris was killed last fall, police charged Andrew Goetz and Chaz Jackson, both 28, with aggravated murder, murder, and aggravated robbery, all with gun specifications.

Johnson and and Leon Jefferson, 28, of 1543 Craigwood Rd., were charged with obstructing official business.

Sergeant Heffernan said the ongoing investigation gave police enough information to charge Johnson with murder.

Family of Mr. Goetz and Mr. Jackson described the men as long-time friends. It's not clear how the two might know Johnson, police said.

Mr. Morris was shot three times outside Ravine Park Village, in the 2300 block of Seaman Road.
