Tiffin man, 55, killed in collision crash in Hancock County

FOSTORIA -- Authorities have identified Craig Scalf of Tiffin as the man who was killed early today when a sport utility vehicle and a tractor-trailer rig collided on Hancock County Road 330 near this community. The collision closed the road from State Rt. 12 to just south of Hancock County Road 216, authorities said.

Mr. Scalf, 55, the driver of the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.

Mr. Scalf was driving west on Road 216 about 5:30 a.m. when he failed to stop for a stop sign at County Road 330, causing the SUV to strike the trailer of the rig driven by James Cole, 45, of Mount Blanchard, Ohio, who was driving north on County Road 330, sheriff deputies said. The impact caused the trailer to overturn, spilling its load of corn, deputies said.

As of about 4 p.m., County Road 330 remained closed as workers continued to clear the road of the spilled grain, a dispatcher said. The road was expected to open later in the day, she said.

Mr. Cole was not injured in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Fostoria, which is located in Hancock, Seneca, and Wood counties, is about 35 miles southeast of Toledo.
