A Toledo police officer who was relieved of duty pending an internal investigation is back at work.

Carlyle Gafeney, 27, a patrol officer, was relieved of duty with pay on Oct. 14. He returned to work full time on Thursday, said police Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

Officer Gafeney was one of three who became entangled in internal and criminal investigations after a gunshot was fired inside a Standart Lofts apartment, 34 S. Erie St., on Oct. 12.

The other two officers, Jada Smith, 25, and Scott Macinnis, 33, resigned in the week following the incident.

The three officers were off duty when Ms. Smith and Mr. Macinnis were at the apartment, rented by the latter, and got into an argument. Ms. Smith allegedly fired a gun in an attempt to harm herself, police have said.

Police said Mr. Gafeney was not in the apartment at the time, but was with the pair earlier in the evening.
