A would-be convenience store robber in West Toledo is dead after an exchange of gunfire with the clerk Saturday night, Toledo police said.

Dead is Christopher Shockley, 28, of 1201 Champlain St., according to police.

Taken to Toledo Hospital for surgery is December Long, 29, police said.

The pair exchanged gunfire about 9:20 p.m. at the Stop & Go at West Sylvania and Rohr Drive in what police called a robbery gone bad. They were alone in the store at 3131 West Sylvania Avenue, near Monroe Street and Secor Road, police said.

Both were taken to Toledo Hospital, where Dr. Cynthia Beisser, a Lucas County deputy coroner, said Shockley was later pronounced dead.

A person who was about to enter the store when shots were fired could be a witness and the store was equipped with a camera, police said. Viewing any images from the camera will be part of the investigation, police said.
