MONROE -- Authorities today identified Nolan Laginess of Newport, Mich. as the victim of a fiery single-car crash on Newport Road in Monroe County's Berlin Township.

Mr. Laginess, 21, who was driving alone, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The victim was driving west on Newport about a mile east of Joann Drive just after 12 a.m. Wednesday when he failed to round a curve in the road and lost control of the car, causing it to crash into a cement culvert, sheriff deputies said. The car then overturned, came to rest on its wheels in a grassy area, and caught fire, they said.

The driver did not wear a seat belt, according to the sheriff's office.

The crash remains under investigation. The incident occurred about five miles northwest of Monroe, which is about 25 miles north of Toledo.
