MILAN, Mich. -- A 39-year-old woman was found dead at the scene of a fire that destroyed a single-family house near this north Monroe County community Wednesday, authorities said.

The woman is believed to be the owner of the house, which was at 14149 Oakville Waltz Rd. in Monroe County's London Township, near the Washtenaw County line, said Detective Sgt. Marc Moore of the Michigan state police. The body was so badly burned that positive identification was pending the release of dental records, he said.

Area fire crews arrived just before 2 p.m. and found the single-story house fully engulfed in flames, Sergeant Moore said. They extinguished the blaze by 4 p.m., about which time the body was found in the basement, he said.

The house was a total loss, according to the sergeant.

The scene of the fire is about five miles east of Milan. Located in Monroe and Washtenaw counties, the city is about 30 miles north of Toledo.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
