Authorities ID victim of Fulton Co. hunting incident

LYONS, Ohio — Authorities today identified Jacob Karamol of Oregon as the man who died of a gunshot Dec. 3 in a deer hunting incident in Fulton County’s Royalton Township.

Mr. Karamol, 21, who was shot once in the head, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to John Windau, Ohio Department of Natural Resources spokesman.

The incident near State Rt. 109 and County Road N. was reported by a 911 caller at 1:52 p.m., Fulton County Sheriff Roy Miller said in a statement.

Mr. Karamol and another man were hunting together when Mr. Karamol approached the man, who was in a tree stand and was lowering his gun to the ground. While being lowered, the gun discharged three times, with one slug hitting the victim, Mr. Windau said.

To lower the gun, the hunter in the tree stand had tied the weapon on the trigger guard with a strap, having failed to unload it and use the safety catch, Mr. Windau said.

At some point, the strap engaged the trigger, causing the gun to fire, the Ohio DNR spokesman said.

The name of the unidentified hunter was withheld pending the investigation.

The incident occurred a mile-and-a-half southeast of Lyons, which is about 25 miles west of Toledo.
