LYONS, Ohio — An Oregon man has been identified as the victim of a shooting that occurred during a hunting outing last week in Fulton County's Royalton Township.

Jacob Karamol, 21, was shot once in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, according to John Windau, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Mr. Karamol and another man were hunting together near State Rt. 109 and County Road N when Mr. Karamol approached his companion, who was in a tree and lowering his gun to the ground. While being lowered, the gun fired three times, with one slug hitting Mr. Karamol, Mr. Windau said.

An investigation revealed the hunter in the tree stand had tied a strap to the firearm’s trigger guard, rather than unload it and use the safety catch, Mr. Windau said. At some point, the strap engaged the trigger, causing the gun to fire, he said.

The second hunter remained unidentified Monday pending the investigation’s completion. The Fulton County Prosecutor’s Office said no charges had been filed.
