Wrong-way crash near Fremont kills 2, injured teen released from hospital

FREMONT — The surviving 15-year-old victim of a double-fatal head-on collision Monday at U.S. 20 and U.S. 6 has been released from a local hospital, family members have confirmed.

Zachary Zimmerman, 15, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles, was originally listed in critical condition at Fremont Memorial Hospital late Monday but was released later that night after being treated for a concussion, said his grandfather, John Hunt, whose wife, Evelyn N. Hunt, was killed in the collision.

The drivers of two vehicles were killed in the collision that occurred when the driver of one of the vehicles drove the wrong way on a divided highway where U.S. 20 and U.S. 6 run together, the patrol said.

Killed were Charles E. Starks, 61, of Fremont and Mrs. Hunt, 57, also of Fremont, troopers said.

The boy was a passenger in Ms. Hunt’s pickup truck, according to the patrol. 

Starks was driving east in the westbound lanes of U.S. 20/​U.S. 6 in Sandusky Township about 7:20 p.m. when he collided with Ms. Hunt’s westbound truck, the patrol said.

Starks was not wearing a seat belt. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The westbound lanes of the highway were closed to traffic for about three hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
