Person struck, killed by train apparently did not hear its approach

GREEN SPRINGS, Ohio -- A man walking along Norfolk Southern railroad tracks in Seneca County's Adams Township was struck and killed Thursday by a train he apparently did not hear as it approached from behind him.

Bryon Skeel, 34, of rural Clyde, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene, Seneca County Sheriff William Eckelberry said in a statement.

The incident occurred about 1:40 p.m. near Seneca-Sandusky County Line Road and South Ridge Road/Adams Township Road 32, about a mile east of Green Springs. Mr. Skeel wore ear buds and a stocking hat as he walked northeasterly on the tracks. The train crew sounded the horn but, the sheriff said, Mr. Skeel did not hear it. He was struck and thrown from the tracks.

The combination of ear buds, stocking hat, and strong wind could have contributed to his not hearing the train, Sheriff Eckelberry said.

The Seneca County coroner's officer removed the body. No autopsy will be performed.

Green Springs is about 45 miles southeast of Toledo.
