FREMONT — An inmate at the Sandusky County jail was found hanged Thursday night, officials said.

Pronounced dead at the scene was Mary Eberly, 38, of Fremont.

A news release from the Sandusky County Sheriff's Office states that Ms. Eberly was found by a female corrections officer at 7:16 p.m.

The inmate was hanging by a phone cord in her housing unit, officials said.

Jail staff performed chest compressions until emergency medical personnel arrived and pronounced Ms. Eberly dead.

Officials said the inmate was not on any type of medical or health watch at the time of her death and the investigation is ongoing.

An autopsy is to be performed, officials said.

Ms. Eberly was arrested Feb. 25 by the Fremont Police Department for theft. In Fremont Municipal Court she was given bond and a 45-day sentence on a probation violation.
