FREMONT — A Sandusky County jail inmate was found hanged by a telephone cord in her housing unit Thursday night, officials said.

Pronounced dead at the scene was Mary Eberly, 38, of Fremont, whose body a female corrections officer found at 7:16 p.m., according to the Sandusky County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said Ms. Eberly was not on any type of medical or health watch. She had been arrested Feb. 25 by Fremont police and charged with theft, after which she was sentenced in Fremont Municipal Court to 45 days in jail for a probation violation.

The Lucas County Coroner’s Office was to perform an autopsy Friday, but Sandusky County Coroner Dr. John Wukie remains the sole source of information about that aspect of the case.

A call to Dr. Wukie’s office Friday afternoon was answered by a woman who said the coroner was unavailable and would have no comment.

Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmeyer said Friday afternoon he had no further information and the investigation continued.
