2 injured in crash near Sandusky

SANDUSKY -- Two people, including a toddler, were injured today when a car and a refuse truck collided on Mason Road near State Rt. 269 near Sandusky, closing Mason for about three hours, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Nevan Jordan, 3, a passenger in a car driven by Heather Russell, 23, of Bellevue, Ohio, was listed in critical condition at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Ms. Russell, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center with incapacitating injuries, according to the patrol's Sandusky post.

The truck driven by Brian Bowers, 44, of Vickery, Ohio, was eastbound on Mason Road in Erie County's Groton Township about 9:14 a.m. when it stopped to collect trash, at which time his vehicle was struck in the rear by the Russell car, troopers said. The driver of the truck was not injured.

Traffic on Mason returned to normal about noon.

The crash remained under investigation.
