Firefighters were doing damage control today at one of their own stations.

At about noon, firefighters were dispatched to Station 3 at Bush and North Erie Streets after smoke was seen coming from what was once a hose tower.

Firefighters had to cut into part of the tower to extinguish what appeared to be a small fire. It was not clear what started the fire, although the out-of-service North Toledo station is being rehabilitated so it can be put back into use.

At 1 p.m., fire crews remained on scene. The amount of damage was not clear.

The station opened in July, 1927. The renovation work, which began in late August, is scheduled to be completed this spring.

The crews assigned to Station 3 have been working out of Station 13 in East Toledo.
