A former inmate at the Toledo Correctional Institution has been sentenced to 11 months in prison for assaulting a guard at the Lucas County jail.

Guy Cheers, 33, pleaded guilty March 19 to assault before Judge Michael Goulding in Lucas County Common Pleas Court, who ordered the 11-month sentence be served after a life sentence Cheers is serving on a Lorain County murder conviction.

In 2012, Cheers was charged with assaulting a guard at the prison. He was awaiting trial on that charge at the county jail when he punched Corrections Officer Joshua Rayburn on Feb. 28. The initial assault charge was dismissed because prosecutors violated Cheers' right to a speedy trial.
