Two Toledo men were injured today when one of the drivers suffered a diabetic episode and collided with the other driver's vehicle before crashing into a downtown building, Toledo police reported.

Jonathan Martell, 29, the driver who was not at fault, was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released, police said.

Herman Scott, 28, of 2801 Upton Ave., the driver whose medical condition reportedly triggered the chain of events, was also treated at the scene and was then taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where his condition was unavailable. He was cited for failure to control his vehicle, according to police.

Mr. Scott was driving a pickup truck east on Monroe Street at 17th street about 7:20 a.m. when he "started to drive in an erratic manner" and drove through a red light at the intersection, striking the Martell pickup, which was stopped in the middle westbound lane of Monroe at 17th, according to a traffic crash report issued by police.

A pickup truck is blocked in by Toledo Police after the driver was halted after striking a pickup with his truck and a business on Monroe Street.

Police said the Scott vehicle then drove east on Monroe and went off the left side of the road, striking the Carquest Auto Parts store, 1717 Monroe St. The business was closed at the time.

The driver then "burned his rear tires off freeing himself from the building" and drove off east on Monroe, according to the police report. A short time later, police stopped him at Monroe and 12th Street, officers said in the report.

A city building inspector later arrived at the scene and told police the building was unsafe and was not to be entered because of the heavy damage, police said in an unusual incident report.

The estimated damage to the building was not available.

Representatives of the business could not be reached for comment.
