Northbound I-75 reopens near Van Buren after rollover
4/23/2014VAN BUREN, Ohio — Northbound I-75 just west of this Hancock County community has reopened after being closed about three hours for a tractor-trailer rollover crash that spilled a load of steel coils into a nearby river earlier today, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.
There were no reported injuries, according to the patrol's Findlay post.
The semi driven by John Chapa, 41, of Rudolph, Ohio, was northbound on I-75 just north of State Rt. 614 about 6:20 a.m. when for unknown reasons it drove off the left side of the road into the median, troopers said in a prepared statement. The vehicle then drove back onto the road, rolled, and lost its load of two 40,000-pound coils before coming to rest.
The tractor and the trailer separated and overturned, and the steel coils rolled north into the Rocky Ford River, from which they were later removed with the help of a crane, troopers said.
Mr. Chapa was cited for failure to control the vehicle, according to the patrol.
Van Buren is about 30 miles south of Toledo.
