OAK HARBOR — Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the death Saturday of a person who was struck by a Norfolk Southern train in Salem Township.

The sheriff’s office received a call about 6:15 a.m. that the train had hit a person on the tracks near the railroad bridge over the Portage River.

Initial reports were that the person was dead at the scene.

The track speed there is 50 mph, said Susan Terpay, a railroad spokesman.

Railroad police also responded.

The train included two locomotives and 73 loaded rail cars carrying finished vehicles, Ms. Terpay said.

Authorities did not release the person’s name or other details.

The stopped train blocked crossings in Oak Harbor for several hours.
