Police arrest Toledo man after chase into Oregon

A Toledo man was arrested early Friday after allegedly trying to break into a home and then leading police on a 15-minute chase through the city.

Victoriano Salinas, 22, of 1050 Albert St. is charged with failure to comply, criminal trespass, menacing, and domestic violence. For those charges, his bond was set at $35,000. He also was arraigned on charges from last year: aggravated menacing and domestic violence. An additional bond of $5,000 was imposed in Toledo Municipal Court.

Police records state that officers were dispatched to a burglary in the 1900 block of Ottawa River Road at 3:34 a.m. Friday and, while en route, learned that the suspect had fled in a pickup. Officers spotted the vehicle at Suder and Shoreland avenues and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver continued on.

The suspect’s vehicle got onto the expressway, exited onto Starr Avenue, and drove into Oregon before driving back into Toledo.

Traffic spikes at Navarre Avenue and White Street flattened one tire on the fleeing vehicle but did not stop the truck. The driver tried to drive across the Anthony Wayne Bridge, but, when he realized it was closed for construction, he did a U-turn. Police said the driver almost collided with an officer’s patrol car.

The vehicle stopped and Mr. Salinas was taken into custody.

Police allege that the suspect sent threatening messages to the mother of his children, saying he had a new “toy,” which police said was in reference to a gun, and that he would “smash her face in,” according to an affidavit.

Mr. Salinas is due in court for a preliminary hearing on May 9.
