Four schools in the Washington Local district have been recognized with national “Purple Heart Schools” awards in recognition for their efforts on behalf of veterans.

Whitmer High School, Jefferson and Washington junior highs, and Greenwood elementary were the first schools in the nation to be recognized by the order, which was chartered by Congress in 1958, school officials said.

Greenwood will be given its award at 9:30 a.m. today in the elementary school’s gym.

In addition, music teacher Alice Lemle will be given a national award by the organization at its convention in Denver in August.

Ms. Lemle has organized an annual veterans assembly and created a wall of photos of veterans with ties to the district. She also took students to Honor Flight receptions to sing.
