Police allege that the suspect assaulted his son on his head, face, and body on Monday, according to court documents. The boy was taken to Toledo Hospital the same day after a 911 caller reported the child as unresponsive. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Lucas County Coroner's Office ruled the death a homicide.

Charges were filed Wednesday and the suspect was booked into the jail at about 9:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Family of the suspect was in court on today and declined to comment.

One woman, described as a sister of the suspect, was inconsolable and was barely able to walk out of the courtroom without assistance.
