Area law enforcement agencies will hold sobriety checkpoints today in Lucas and Wood counties, officials said.

In Lucas County, city police, in conjunction with the Lucas County DUI Task Force, will set up a sobriety checkpoint in the 2500 block of Woodville Road in Northwood, police said. It will begin at 9 p.m. and run through 2 a.m. Saturday. The purpose is to deter or intercept impaired drivers, police said.

In Wood County, checkpoints will operate on Second Street in Grand Rapids and on Findlay Street in Haskins, both from 6 p.m. until midnight.

Police typically divert vehicles during checkpoints for further inspection and cite motorists for violations other than DUI, including driving with a suspended license, not having a license, and not wearing a seat belt.
