Coast Guard assists sinking vessel off Middle Bass Island

MARBLEHEAD, Ohio — The Coast Guard rescued two people and two dogs from a sinking vessel on the northeast side of Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie Sunday.

The names of those rescued have not yet been released.

According to the Coast Guard in Cleveland, the 33-foot recreational boat hit a rocky bottom around 9:30 a.m. and began taking on water.

A response boat was launched from Coast Guard Station Marblehead; a response boat from a Coast Guard unit in Port Clinton, and a commercial salvage vessel.

Coast Guard crew members safely got the people and the dogs from the sinking vessel.

The commercial salvage vessel and the Marblehead crew successfully removed water from the vessel by using three pumps.

The commercial salvage vessel towed the distressed vessel into a marina in Marblehead. The two passengers and two dogs were transported to the marina aboard a response boat.

There are were no reports of injuries or signs of pollution, according to the Coast Guard.
