Missing Bedford woman found safe in Detroit suburb

Case still being handled as abduction

TEMPERANCE — An 18-year-old woman who was reported missing Thursday night after her car was found about a mile from her Bedford Township home has been found safe in a southwest suburb of Detroit.

Hayley Turner was located Friday afternoon in Ecorse, Mich., authorities said.

“She is safe and sound. I can’t give you anymore information than that at this time,” said Cpl. Chris Trevino of the Ecorse Police Department.

Miss Turner, daughter of Christy and Thomas Turner, a Toledo dentist, was taken to the police department, where she was being interviewed by Monroe County sheriff’s detectives, he said.

Chief Deputy Heath Velliquette of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said her disappearance is still being handled as a possible abduction.

“We are absolutely not ruling that out until we gain more information from her,” he said. “We don’t have any reason to believe it did not happen.”

During a news conference Friday morning, Sheriff Dale Malone said information from a cell phone conversation between the woman and a friend indicated she had been taken at gunpoint on Dean Road near Crabb Road in the township.

Miss Turner was in her car near the intersection about 10 p.m. when she told the friend she saw a man lying in the ditch and she was going to stop and leave the vehicle to check on him.

Moments later, Miss Haley told her friend the man “has a gun,” and the phone went dead, the sheriff said.

Sheriff Malone said the friend then called Mr. Turner who drove to the location, where he found the car running and unoccupied.

Mrs. Turner told reporters she missed and loved her daughter and pleaded for her return.

“We just want you safely home. No questions asked,” she said.

Chief Deputy Velliquette said he didn’t know whether Miss Turner needed medical treatment, or the circumstances on how she was found. He said her cell phone was found about 11 a.m. Friday near the location where her car was found, and given to authorities.
