Man found shot in East Toledo housing complex

A Toledo man was found shot in the leg today at an East Toledo housing complex.

Police said the victim was transported to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center with injuries they said were not life-threatening.

While police did not release a name, 21-year-old Kayla Ballez said it was her friend, Kevin Stewart, 24, who she found in his home at the Weiler Homes on Fassett Street with a gunshot wound in his right leg about 7:45 p.m.

“He just kept saying, ‘I got shot, I got shot,' ” Ms. Ballez said, adding that Mr. Stewart suggested to her that someone had come from behind and shot him outside his apartment, which he then entered through the back door.

A Toledo police sergeant at the scene would not confirm that version of events.

“It looks like he probably shot himself in his right leg,” Sgt. Stephen Zarecki said. “There was no holes in his clothing and he may have had a gun of his own that he tried to put in his waistband.”
