Ludeman won't run for Lucas County auditor

Saying he felt a commitment to the voters who just sent him back to Toledo City Council for another four-year term and other reasons, Republican Rob Ludeman announced today he has decided against running for Lucas County Auditor this year.

Mr. Ludeman's decision, for now, leaves Democratic incumbent Auditor Anita Lopez without a Republican opponent, but candidates have until Feb. 5 to turn in petitions.

"After careful and prayerful consideration I have decided not to pursue the office of auditor at this time," Mr. Ludeman said in a statement sent to Lucas County Republican Chairman Jon Stainbrook and The Blade.

Mr. Ludeman, 60, was re-elected in November to an at-large seat on council, and was re-appointed Tuesday night to chair the economic development committee. He was the top vote getter among 12 candidates running for city council at-large in the November election.

He also said he felt an obligation to his family and to newly-elected Councilman Sandy Spang, whom he campaigned for, as well as to Marcia Helman, whose campaign for the District 2 seat he is chairing. Both Ms. Spang and Ms. Helman are independents.

“Although I feel the race this year for that office is one I would win, and an office in which I would do a great job for the citizens, the time for further consideration is not now,” Mr. Ludeman said.
