Lucas County Republican Chairman Jon Stainbrook fended off a challenge this evening to be re-elected by the county party‘‍s central committee.

Mr. Stainbrook, 50, has been party chairman for six years and he touted his record of fund-raising and fielding a slate of candidates to run against Democrats before tonight’‍s vote.

He was challenged Tea Party-backed former Toledo tavern owner Bill Delaney, 73. Mr. Delaney ran unsuccessfully for Toledo City Council in 2013 with no party affiliation, and then defeated Mr. Stainbrook in the May 6 primary election for a state Republican party post.

Mr. Stainbrook is one of three Lucas County Board of Elections members removed from their posts by Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted after the office descended into dysfunction and chaos from which it could not recover without major overhaul, Husted said.
