AL roundup: Hutchison, Bautista propel Jays
8/31/2014TORONTO — Drew Hutchison pitched seven shutout innings, Jose Bautista homered for the fourth straight game and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 2-0 on Saturday.
Mark Teixeira’s fourth-inning double was the only hit allowed by Hutchison (9-11), who walked two and struck out nine.
Aaron Sanchez retired all six batters he faced for his first major league save as the Blue Jays improved to 8-17 in August and, at 68-67, avoided falling below .500 for the first time since May 14, when they were 20-21.
Bautista hit a two-out, two-run homer off Michael Pineda (3-3) in the first. It’s the second time in his career Bautista has connected in four consecutive games. He also did it from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, 2009.
ASTROS 2, RANGERS 0: At Houston, Scott Feldman pitched a three-hitter and the Astros defeated Texas.
Feldman (8-10) struck out five and walked one in his second complete game this month. The three hits allowed matched a career best for Feldman, who also threw a three-hitter against San Diego on May 1, 2013. His previous shutout was Sept. 6, 2013, against the Chicago White Sox.
Held hitless for the first five innings by Robbie Ross, Jr., the Astros scored twice in the seventh off reliever Phil Klein (0-2).
RAYS 7, RED SOX 0: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Jake Odorizzi and two pitchers combined to allow Boston one hit in Tampa Bay’s victory.
Coming off a start Monday night in which he gave up a career-high eight runs over four innings in a 9-1 loss at Baltimore, Odorizzi (10-11) allowed a fourth-inning single to Will Middlebrooks, three walks, and struck out seven over seven innings.
Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia was shaken up and removed from the game in the second inning. It appeared Pedroia was struck in the head by the arm of Logan Forsythe as the Rays infielder was sliding head-first into second while advancing on a flyball.
ORIOLES 3, TWINS 2: At Baltimore, Chris Davis hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh, Jimmy Paredes homered and the Orioles defeated Minnesota.
The Orioles have won five of their past six games and lead the Yankees by eight games in the AL East. The Twins have lost 10 of their past 14 games.
