The Multi-Faith Council of N.W. Ohio announced that April 25-27 will be a compassionate weekend. April 25 is the opening day of a Compassion Networking Convention to be held at Seagate Convention Center, and regional officials will sign a compassion resolution that day. The 13th annual MultiFaith Banquet, at the Franciscan Center at Lourdes University, will close out the events.
First century at Christmas time
“A Night in Bethlehem” takes place mostly in daylight today and Sunday, from 1 to 6 p.m. each day, at Hope Lutheran Church, 2201 Secor Rd. Creating the look of the time of Jesus' birth, the experience will have animals in a stable, a marketplace with artisans at work; and even a synagogue. The music might be a bit newer than the first century, however. Today at 2 p.m., the Bowsher High School Orchestra performs, and at 3 the vocal ensemble Collaboration, then on Sunday at 2 the Ottawa Hills High School Choraliers sing, followed by the Central Catholic Glee Club at 4. A shuttle will go between the church and the parking lot at Ottawa Hills Elementary School, 3602 Indian Rd., Ottawa Hills. For more information, go to hopetoledo.net.
Irish oriented
The Rev. Oliver F. Williams of Notre Dame University will speak on “Recent Catholic Social Thought: A Remarkable Turn” today at 2 p.m. at Corpus Christi University Parish's annual McCormick Lecture. Admission is free. The lecture is sponsored by Corpus Christi and Toledo's Notre Dame Alumni Club, and the lecture is named after the Rev. Richard McCormick, a Toledo native who taught at Notre Dame. A discussion follows the lecture.
Japanese Christmas
At Calgary Church, Christmas has a Japanese theme at its combined Christmas party and missions fund-raiser today at 5 pm. A gourmet dinner will be served, with Japanese culture on display as money is collected for Amanda Keller, who does missionary work in Japan. Tickets are $10, and attendees are asked to bring wrapped gifts for auction. Calvary is at 1360 Conant St., Maumee.
Hanukkah lit up
The eight days might have passed, but Hanukkah Palooza! comes to Southview High School's Performing Arts Center, 7225 Sylvania Ave., Sylvania, Sunday at 1:30 p.m. David Broza, an Israeli musician and peace advocate, will present a free concert, supported by the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Greater Toledo.
Christmas with the Blues
On Sunday at 5 p.m. the 3rd Floor Band's “Blues Christmas” comes to the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St., Maumee, where the Village Church meets. The show uses rock, folk, and blues to tell the Christmas story and is sponsored by seven churches: three from the United Church of Christ (NuVizion, Park Congregational, and Sylvania), three United Methodist Church congregations (First in Sylvania, St. Paul's, and Unity), and the Village Church, which is affiliated with both the UCC and the UMC. Tickets are $5, and proceeds will benefit the YWCA Battered Women's Shelter, the H.O.P.E. Center, and the Concha del Oro Methodist mission in Mexico.
